The beginning of the building of the Berlin Wall was on August 13, 1961. Streets were torn up and barricades of paving stones were erected. East Berliners were no longer permitted to travel across the border. In the next few days construction brigades began replacing the provisional barriers with a permanent structure.
The main reason for the construction of the
Berlin Wall was to keep East Berliners from leaving to go to West Berlin. This also worked the other way around keeping people from West Berlin entering East Berlin and undermining the Socialist state. Between the establishment of East Germany and the construction of the Berlin Wall over 2.7 million people fled to West Berlin.
Another reason for the building of the Berlin Wall was economics. Too many well educated people moved from East Germany or lived in East Germany and worked in west because it is cheaper in East Germany. This caused East Germany to lose money and may have sparked the idea to build a wall.
